The Guardian March 09
Following on from the success of this year’s inaugural Tuborg Musical Comedy Awards and the Time Out Critics Choice showcase at Madame Jo Jo’s, Avin a Larf has put together a tantalising showcase of our nation’s finest musical comedians for one night.
Musical comedy is experiencing a renaissance in this country: a glance at the If.comedy award rosters of the past few years shows just how often musical comedians have walked away with the top prizes (notably David O’Doherty, Tom Basden and Tim Minchin). Supported by the Advantage Creative Fund,Avin a Larf is a company that is dedicated to promoting the venerable art of musical comedy as an independent genre. Featuring If.comedy nominee and rising star of the circuit Pippa Evans, winners of the Tuborg Musical Comedy Awards Adams and Rea, BBC Radio 2 star and Chortle Award Nominee Wilson Dixon and the hottest cabaret duo since pointy bras were invented, Frisky and Mannish, this is the best chance at the festival to catch a glimpse of the diversity and brilliance of this resurgent genre. If those four fine acts were not enough, BBC3 Comedy Shuffle’s Ginger and Black will knock you for six with their deadpan double act, alongside stars of www.musicalcomedy.co.uk Brigitte Aphrodite, the inimitable singer-poet and Lazyhand, the finest Scottish purveyors of musical innuendo. Compere for the evening will be the fantastic Irish musical comedian (Ireland’s self-proclaimed sixth best rapper), Rob Broderick.
